“Top Ten Tuesday” is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Every week they choose a different topic, and this week’s topic is…..
I thought this was going to be a harder post than it was. Once I started going through my GR “read” list I ended up with a list of 7 books I liked more than I thought I would and 8 that I liked less than I expected. I narrowed it down to the top 5 for each.
Books I liked more than I thought I would:
This is not my typical genre, but it was gaining a lot of hype a couple years ago. I wanted to read it before the movie came out though so I picked it up on Audio. I was so surprised at how much I loved the book. It was narrated by RC Bray, and I don’t think I would have enjoyed it so much without his voice. His dry tone was perfect for the humor in the book, where his deep notes exhibited the sadness and sorrow Mark felt while living alone for years on a deserted planet. I would absolutely read/listen to this again.
I had never heard of Sarah Fine before this book, but it was free on Kindle Unlimited so I thought, why not. Sanctum is the first book in the Guards of the Shadowlands series. I loved this series. Trigger warning though — It’s dark and deals with topics such as suicide and the concept of Heaven and Hell. I highly recommend this series, and if you have Kindle Unlimited you have nothing to lose!

I had really high expectations for this book after reading The Lunar Chronicles, but I also had reservations. We know how it ends based on Alice in Wonderland. I will tell you, I’m an HEA person; I typically loathe books without one. Heartless surprised me though and while it ended the way I knew it would, the journey there was beautiful. I don’t know that I would read it again, however. My heart can only take so much, lol.

I didn’t go into Partials with any expectations, as Dan Wells is another author I was unfamiliar with. Wells is really great at world building and I was drawn in almost immediately. The protagonist is multi-dimensional, and although it plays on the “one teenage girl has the only power to save the world” trope, it is done very well.
This is typically a hit or miss book for people. I really enjoyed it, but I also went in with the expectation that it was going to be frilly and fluffy and not much substance. While it is a lighter read, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
Books I liked less than I thought I would:
This is honestly the worst book I’ve ever read. I judged it by it’s beautiful cover, but wow. It’s awful. I won’t go into on this post, but my review is here if you are interested in reading more about why I hated it so much. I think it’s also free on Kindle Unlimited right now, so if you are a masochist you can still check it out without risking more than your time.
I read the first three books, but this one just couldn’t draw me in. Then I tried picking it back up several times over the period of a couple months, but no. I think the draaaaaaama was just too much. It’s a pity, I enjoyed the series until this book.
I wouldn’t say I loved the first book, but it was decent enough to start reading the second. I couldn’t get into this one though. Ceony annoyed me to no end. SHE NEVER LISTENS TO ANYONE. She got people killed or hurt because she was too big of a moron to admit when EXPERT MAGICIANS knew more about magic than her, an apprentice. I couldn’t even finish the book because I couldn’t deal with her arrogance or stupidity for one more second.
Up side, this is another book on Kindle Unlimited so it didn’t cost me anything more than the time I wasted reading it.
I didn’t hate this book, but it was just meh for me. My expectations were high because of all the rave reviews, but I couldn’t connect with the characters and it fell flat for me.
Covet by J.R. Ward
This is another book I had high expectations for because it was recommended by several friends. I honestly didn’t care about any of the characters and I didn’t like the chemistry between the main male and female. meh.
Sorry if I didn’t like one of your favs! 😀
