The Barrier Between: Collector, Book 2 by Stacey Marie Brown

Title: The Barrier Between
Author: Stacey Marie Brown
Genre: NA, Urban Fantasy
Format: Audio
Narrated by: Amy Landon
Description (Source: Amazon):

As a reminder, I review sequels a little different from other reviews. I am going to hide the description from the main page so you will have to click “Read More” due to potential spoilers from previous books in the description or my review.

My review for the first book, City in Embers, is here:

Rating:

Top Ten Tuesday (5)

“Top Ten Tuesday” is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Every week they choose a different topic, and this week’s topic is…..

I thought this was going to be a harder post than it was. Once I started going through my GR “read” list I ended up with a list of 7 books I liked more than I thought I would and 8 that I liked less than I expected. I narrowed it down to the top 5 for each.

Books I liked more than I thought I would:

.1.

The Martian by Any Weir

This is not my typical genre, but it was gaining a lot of hype a couple years ago. I wanted to read it before the movie came out though so I picked it up on Audio. I was so surprised at how much I loved the book. It was narrated by RC Bray, and I don’t think I would have enjoyed it so much without his voice. His dry tone was perfect for the humor in the book, where his deep notes exhibited the sadness and sorrow Mark felt while living alone for years on a deserted planet. I would absolutely read/listen to this again.

.2.

Sanctum by Sarah Fine

I had never heard of Sarah Fine before this book, but it was free on Kindle Unlimited so I thought, why not. Sanctum is the first book in the Guards of the Shadowlands series. I loved this series. Trigger warning though — It’s dark and deals with topics such as suicide and the concept of Heaven and Hell. I highly recommend this series, and if you have Kindle Unlimited you have nothing to lose!

.3.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

I had really high expectations for this book after reading The Lunar Chronicles, but I also had reservations. We know how it ends based on Alice in Wonderland. I will tell  you, I’m an HEA person; I typically loathe books without one. Heartless surprised me though and while it ended the way I knew it would, the journey there was beautiful. I don’t know that I would read it again, however. My heart can only take so much, lol.

.4.

Partials by Dan Wells

I didn’t go into Partials with any expectations, as Dan Wells is another author I was unfamiliar with. Wells is really great at world building and I was drawn in almost immediately. The protagonist is multi-dimensional, and although it plays on the “one teenage girl has the only power to save the world” trope, it is done very well.

.5.

The Selection by Kiera Cass

This is typically a hit or miss book for people. I really enjoyed it, but I also went in with the expectation that it was going to be frilly and fluffy and not much substance. While it is a lighter read, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

Books I liked less than I thought I would:

.1.

Mechanic by Alexa Riley

This is honestly the worst book I’ve ever read. I judged it by it’s beautiful cover, but wow. It’s awful. I won’t go into on this post, but my review is here if you are interested in reading more about why I hated it so much. I think it’s also free on Kindle Unlimited right now, so if you are a masochist you can still check it out without risking more than your time.

.2.

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

I read the first three books, but this one just couldn’t draw me in. Then I tried picking it back up several times over the period of a couple months, but no. I think the draaaaaaama was just too much. It’s a pity, I enjoyed the series until this book.

.3.

The Glass Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

I wouldn’t say I loved the first book, but it was decent enough to start reading the second. I couldn’t get into this one though. Ceony annoyed me to no end. SHE NEVER LISTENS TO ANYONE. She got people killed or hurt because she was too big of a moron to admit when EXPERT MAGICIANS knew more about magic than her, an apprentice. I couldn’t even finish the book because I couldn’t deal with her arrogance or stupidity for one more second.

Up side, this is another book on Kindle Unlimited so it didn’t cost me anything more than the time I wasted reading it.

.4.

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

I didn’t hate this book, but it was just meh for me. My expectations were high because of all the rave reviews, but I couldn’t connect with the characters and it fell flat for me.

.5.

Covet by J.R. Ward

This is another book I had high expectations for because it was recommended by several friends. I honestly didn’t care about any of the characters and I didn’t like the chemistry between the main male and female. meh.

Sorry if I didn’t like one of your favs! 😀

Do you have any on your TTT list that are on mine? Include your TTT list below so I can check yours out. I’m always on the prowl for more books to add to my ever growing TBR list.

‘Balance’ by Janelle Stalder

Title: Balance (The Balance Series Book 1)

Author: Janelle Stalder

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Supernatural, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

Format: eBook (ARC provided to me, but it is available on Amazon now.)

Description (Source: GoodReads):

A love written in the stars, or born in the depths of darkness?
Where fate has brought them together, so will it tear them apart.
This is not a story of chance, but one that was destined to come to pass, and with it the fall of the darkest shadow to roam the earth.
Vivian French will soon realize that monsters are not just characters from story books, but creatures who can tear your soul apart and leave nothing in its place.
This is not a love story.
This is a tale, of a fallen angel and The One who will bring about a change in the Balance.

Overall Assessment:
I was selected to received this ARC via the author’s newsletter; the author was requesting the ARCs be read before the release date (next week) so I needed to set the other books I was currently reading aside to read this one first. Once I finally did that I finished the book in less than a day because I spent every spare moment reading this. I haven’t been consumed by a book like that in a long time. I have read other books by Janelle Stalder and really enjoy her writing style.

This is a paranormal romance, but it’s not overly graphic. If you don’t normally read romances, this could be a good one to ‘dip your toe’ into.

Oh, and it ends on a massive cliffhanger.

Image result for cliffhanger memeAs I’ve said in previous reviews, I don’t mind cliffhangers but for those of you who do: You’ve been warned! But don’t fret! Stalder is releasing book two hopefully in the beginning of next year so we won’t have to wait long to find out what happens 🙂 The second book is already on GoodReads!
