I’m posting this later than I expected due to some health issues that have come up over the past weeks. I apologize for not being as present as I wish I could be lately. 🙂
Author: Terry Maggert
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Narrator: Julia Whelan
Description (Source: Amazon):
Her guardian angel was pushed.
Keiron was never meant to be anything other than a hero. Born high above in a place of war and deception, he is Heartborn, a being of purity and goodness in a world where violence and deceit are just around every corner.
His disappearance will spark a war he cannot see, for Keiron has pierced the light of days to save a girl he has never met, for reasons he cannot understand. Livvy Foster is seventeen, brave, and broken. With half a heart, she bears the scars of a lifetime of pain and little hope of survival.
Until Keiron arrives.
In the middle of a brewing war and Livvy’s failing heart, Keiron will risk everything for Livvy, because a Heartborn’s life can only end in one way: Sacrifice.
Fall with Livvy and Keiron as they seek the truth about her heart, and his power, and what it means to love someone who will give their very life to save you.”
Review of the story:
Heartborn starts out introducing Keiron and his brother in the sky (or kind of alternate universe) where the angels live. Right away tragedy strikes Kieron when his brother brutally injures him and pushes him toward Earth. I really love when books start off with so much action right out of the gates, it usually sets up an action packed story that I can’t wait to unfold.
I really liked Kieron’s character, but Livvy fell a little flat for me. I think sometimes her character was a little contradictory and whiny, plus she cries a lot. Because I couldn’t connect with her character I was not particularly won over by the romance in this book. I am not averse to insta-love when done correctly but this felt a little forced at times for me.
I will say, while Livvy’s story line wasn’t what I had hoped, there is another story line in the clouds that runs parallel to Kieron’s and Livvy’s and it was great. I found myself anticipating those scenes of the impending war and house Windhook more and more as the book progressed. Kieron’s family (House Windhook) was really interesting to read about and Cressa was a really complex and likable character.
The ending was maybe a little predictable, but satisfying nonetheless. It left the book open for more in the series, but provided enough closure to wrap up major loose ends.
Review of the audio:
I am convinced that Julia Whelan could narrate a book about harvesting corn and I would still listen with rapt attention. If you haven’t heard any of her work you need to go check her out now! She has narrated over 230 titles on Audible, so if you are new to audio books I would highly suggest starting with a book that she narrates.
–rounded up from 3.5
– Overall, the book was pretty good, despite some issues I had with the love story. I would probably recommend to younger audiences or people who really love insta-love stories.
